Chapter Thirteen

Although I felt fortunate to count Amira Patel as one of my close friends, I barely knew her older half-brother. Nick hadn’t lived in Shady Grove when I’d moved here, and in fact, she’d never mentioned him until he showed up before Christmas.

Nick had a suspicious past. Shortly after I’d arrived in town, I’d started hearing rumors that the Shady Grove bar was haunted. Okay, whatever, I wasn’t even old enough to drink at the time. But then, when a friend of a friend bought the place last fall, she’d agreed to investigate.

One of the things Emma had learned was that the bar used to be owned by Nick Patel. The ghost rumors delighted him so much, he’d arranged tours. He’d brought in television shows to film people ghost hunting. However, he had no actual ability to communicate with spirits. The whole thing was a scam.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, when business dried up, he’d sold the place. He hadn’t told the buyers about the haunted history, and they were none too pleased to find out. Nick took their money and skipped town. That’s when Amira and her parents broke contact with him, and why I’d never heard of him until recently.

Obviously, having poor business morals didn’t necessarily make someone a murderer. And yet, combined with the fact that we’d seen Nick and Erica together a few hours before she died, their secret relationship, and his predecessor disappearing under mysterious circumstances, he certainly seemed like a viable suspect.

Before we talked to him, I wanted as much evidence as we could gather. First, I texted Amira.

Hey. Do you talk to Nick much now that he’s back in town?
